If you asked the people of Civica what they fear more than the Novum, the mythical ship-eating creature said to haunt the black waters beyond their colony’s protective borders, most would answer without hesitation: the Betas.

These artificial humans, created by their ancestors before the "Fall of Man" and later cast out after Earth’s destruction, have become the specter that haunts every whispered rumor and every dark horizon.
